December 2005

Great turnouts provide proof that Kemptville curlers are enjoying their new facility. Every day the curling rink resounds with the rumble of rocks and the roars of rabid curlers entreating their partners to sweep harder. New and experienced members alike are honing their skills and exulting in great shots or commiserating over the unfortunate tick or the draw that came up just short. Those on the losing teams learn that all is not lost when their opposing curler buys them a coffee or, better yet, a libation from the bar. Sociability, after all, is the best part of curling! If you haven’t taken part in these great days, hurry on down. The social hours following the games are also well attended and enthusiastically enjoyed by all. W.K.

Upcoming Friendlies In Kemptville

January 6 & 20 w February 3, 10 & 17 w March 3
Members are encouraged to sign up to participate in the friendly bonspiels with other clubs. These events give an opportunity to visit other clubs, meet new friends and see how things are done somewhere else. Friendlies pending include December 15 at Smiths Falls and December 20 at Manotick. Sign up and play!

Hosting Friendlies: The organizing committee is looking for servers for the luncheons held afterward the curling event. Servers are needed from 10 am to 2 pm, serving approximately 40 people. If you are unable to help out by attending, desserts are always welcome to be dropped off at the club. Francine Gould (258-1842) is the person to contact, be it to help out as a server, deliver desserts, or to plan your event.

Little Rocks
The Little Rock’ers have gotten their season up and running with 56 children, ages 6 - 18 participating, filling up all 5 sheets for 2 hours each Sunday afternoon. Coaches Jurgen, Alison and Tina, along with the help of parents are doing a fantastic job teaching our children the basic techniques of the game. At Week 6, the children are improving their delivery, sweeping techniques, and learning how to score. As a parent with 2 daughters participating, I can honestly say that the programme is top notch - the hot chocolate and cookies at the end of the game are certainly a hit too! The Christmas Party is Dec. 18th.

BRICK A slang term for the curling stone.

BURNED STONE A stone in motion touched by a member of either team, or any part of their equipment.

Quotes from our Little Rock’ers “Curling is cool and it is fun learning a new sport that I didn’t even know kids were allowed to play”
Annie U., age 7

“I have seen pros on TV and it looked like fun and so I wanted to play too” Laura U. , age 9

Saturday Night Social

A great opportunity to come out, get your rocks off and meet new friends. No prior commitment required. Show up, put your name tag on a hook and play a game. The fellowship is great and no one cares if you made that wide open take out or not. W.K.

Volunteers Needed: We need volunteers to help coordinate the Friday Night Mixed and the Saturday Night Social Events. A great deal of organizational duties are being assumed by a few members and it would be appreciated if some eager beavers could help reduce the demands on everyone’s time and talents. There is a need for helpers on all committees. Don’t hesitate to offer your talents.

My name is Donna Scott and I am very excited about putting together your newsletter. I must admit though, I am very new to the game of curling. I have participated in 2 bonspiels but they were over 15 years ago so I’m learning about curling alongside my girls and my husband. With that in mind, I ask for you patience if I ask ‘rookie questions’. I am open to ideas for the newsletter and welcome any offers of help; admittedly some of the information here was taken from our website (it’s got lots of great information) and thank you to Winston Kinnaird for helping me with writing this first edition. Our plan is to publish monthly, by the 7th of each month. Deadline for submissions is the first of each month. Feel free to contact me with your ideas and items to be included. I’m looking forward to working with you this season! Donna Scott
Curling Etiquette (from the Glendal Golf & Country Club)
Etiquette is the courtesy and sportsmanship that you show your teammates and your opponents so that
everyone can enjoy the game and play as well as possible without being distracted.

Before the game:
Know the date and time of your game.
If you are unable to play, inform your skip and find someone (a spare) to play for you. It is your responsibility to find a spare.
Arrive 15 minutes before game time and do not be late. If you expect to be late, inform your skip or another member of your team.
If possible, be on the ice at game time (don't stand and talk in the lounge while your ice is vacant).
Shake hands with your opponents, tell them your name and wish them good curling.

During the game:

Be ready when it is your turn to deliver a rock, or your teammates' turn to deliver a rock.
Be quiet and do not move when your opponent is about to deliver a rock.
Stay on your own sheet of ice preferably close to the outside of the sheet when it is the opposition's turn.
Pay attention to what is going on in your game. Use the opportunity to learn when a rock needs brushing or to learn game strategy.
Compliment any player on a good shot. Do not show your frustration at an opponent's lucky shot or a teammate's poor shot.
If you touch a moving rock while you are brushing, tell your skip immediately but do not stop the rock, unless told to by your skip

After the game:

Give each of your teammates and opponents a handshake and thank them for the game before leaving the ice.
If you won the game, offer to buy your opponent (same position as you) a drink.
If you lost the game, offer to reciprocate after the first drink.
